Using nursery rhymes and popular children songs while signing in American Sign Language is a great way stimulate language development. Sing and Sign combines the benefits of both music and signing so that children don't even realize that they are learning words in a second language! Using movement, music, singing, and sign is a great way to engage children from 6 months - 6 years! You would be shocked to learn that babies can communicate through sign before speaking (communicate things like, "milk" "more" "bathroom" "mom" "dad" "dog" and more!) It also is applicable to toddlers and younger children!

Sample Activities and Instructions

Choose age appropriate song. Some examples include "If you're happy and you know it", "itsy bitsy spider", "five little monkeys". Just to name a few!
Sing and Sign! Using a guitar or just singing acapella while signing the important words in the song, such as major nouns and verbs!
Follow up after the session to see what they remember! The best way for them to learn is practice with one another! Shy children sometimes can especially take to sign!
