Color and line, two cornerstones of painting and drawing, are fascinating to explore for children of all ages. Through sequential art making activities, we will explore cool and warm colors, and the many different expressive possibilities within line making. As sessions advance, we will learn how to combine color and line into unique art projects, with novel and fun materials. Together we will explore questions such as: How do certain colors and lines make me feel? What temperature do different colors feel like? How can I use color and line to express how I feel? As we progress, we will become better art makers, and improve our language and vocabulary skills along the way.

Sample Activities and Instructions

Warm and Cool Color Blocks -- With construction paper, paper folding, and oil pastels, we will make an abstract drawing with blocks of cool and warm colors. We will investigate how different colors feel next to each other on the page, and what temperature our drawings feel like as we move through them.

Color and Line, Background and Foreground We will combine our investigations of line and color by building upon our color block drawings, and using oil pastels to make expressive line on top of our color drawings. We will learn how drawings can have more than one layer, and a “foreground” and a “background.” We will investigate how our line making can relate to the colors in the background of our drawings.

Color and Line Express to Express a Favorite Place in Our Life -- Continuing to work with both line and color, we will return to drawing with tape, and draw a favorite place that we go to in our lives. We will think about what kinds of lines, and what kinds of colors best express how we feel in this favorite place of ours. What are the things in this place that we can draw, and what color will they be? What kinds of lines will we use to draw them?
